It's nice when things click on a dedicated painting trip, making it worth the while.

The ruins aside, I do find Chaco Canyon itself to be quite scenic - it's a wide, relatively low canyon, and the sandstones are totally different in color than Utah slickrock. The shadows and glow that occur in the late afternoon are amazing.

I really appreciate your comment about getting a sense of place from the paintings; that is important and means at least something worked ;).Sonya Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01879889885162011649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3640331618261060721.post-64899203767581107952012-05-10T09:17:41.698-04:002012-05-10T09:17:41.698-04:00I'm so impressed at all the work you were able...I'm so impressed at all the work you were able to get done! (And totally jealous of your whole trip ;-) Such a beautiful area of the country. Your paintings are wonderful. I get such a sense of place from them. I am looking forward to seeing your triptych!Debbie Shirleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00267734938299378975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3640331618261060721.post-42254248457974695672012-05-09T10:51:16.715-04:002012-05-09T10:51:16.715-04:00Hi Gabrielle -It really was a lot of fun - product...Hi Gabrielle -It really was a lot of fun - productive fun, even :). I never know what will happen, painting-wise, on these trips, so to have finished as many paintings as I did (and not have any be immediate "tossers") was a surprise. The longer I was there, the more subjects I found to paint, which isn't always the case!

Re the little alcove ruin: we were sort of musing about its purpose, especially given that the Chaco area was comprised of Great Houses and some smaller houses, all of which had dozens or hundreds of rooms. So, this little isolated ruin is an enigma. A "farmer's house" is how one of the gals described it.

Thanks so much for your comments!Sonya Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01879889885162011649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3640331618261060721.post-37154348752826707062012-05-09T09:12:43.343-04:002012-05-09T09:12:43.343-04:00Wow, what a wonderful experience you got to have t...Wow, what a wonderful experience you got to have there! These pieces are lovely and I enjoyed the titles of your pieces, too. "Single Family Home" made me laugh because my husband and I seem to keep ending up in towns and cities where the cost of housing is ridiculous, so whenever we see an abandoned house or a ruin like that one we exclaim "We could afford that one!" (although probably not because the land is so expensive.) Anyway, I'm glad you had such a wonderful time at Chaco Canyon. I hope you get to go back next year.Gabriellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15086855019663714453noreply@blogger.com
