Winter landscape - aspen tree shadows, pastel - SOLD

Departing from the grass and river theme for this piece to bring you a painting featuring my favorite tree...

Aspen Shadows - SOLD
12x12 - pastel on black cardstock

Shot from the passenger window during our snowshoeing trip to Haviland Lake on Thursday, I knew instantly had I had paint it:  awesomely cool shadows and it also leans towards abstraction.

I think this might be fun to try in oils, if I can manage to pry the pastels from my hands long enough, that is.

Anyway, it was a fun challenge.

  1. Well, you know Sherrie loves it. For all the reasons you cited plus personal predilection. ;-)

  5. It looks really lovely. I like how you gave the tree trunks the feeling of receding into the distance.

  6. Sherrie - she of the amazing winter shadow linocuts! Yes, we are kindred souls in this regard, aren't we? One of my favorite things of winter, these trees and their shadows.

Helen, Carol, LeAnn and Susan - thank you all so much for your comments!

Hi Casey - actually, I'm going to be doing a guest artist exhibit at a local gallery here in town in Feb, and I'm planning on including some of these winter studio pieces I've been doing, along with some plein air work. There are a few other opportunities that may arise in the near future as well :). Thanks as always for your comments and support.

  7. love aspen in any form and these are wonderful; just framed my own verson of aspen trunks, (and not an aspen in sight in sunny FL.) shadows are the best part of snow!

  8. People think of winter as being so dreary and gray, yet look at all of the delicious colors in this scene! Thanks for opening our eyes more. This is beautiful.

  9. Hi Cindy - I totally agree about the snow and shadows: it is ALL about the shadows! Thank you much for stopping by. I went to look for your aspen painting on your blog and website, but didn't see it!

Hi Gabrielle - I know, right? I have lived where winters were gray and dreary, but it's definitely not here in CO! I see amazing colors when I'm outdoors in winter, and this stand of young aspen definitely had it going on :).

  10. Beautiful Sonya. I love those shadows. They seem to have both delicacy and strength, which I think is kind of the nature of trees in winter. Just love it. :)

  11. Thanks, Crystal :). I think you are on to something with the delicacy and strength concept here; I hadn't really thought about it, but you are right! Especially these little guys, that are delicate now but will eventually become tall, strapping aspens.
