Two Durango area landscapes in pastel - plein air

I'm leaving for a weekend trip to Taos in a bit, so this post will be super short - just two recent paintings of the landscape near Durango.

Yesterday morning's painting, from Haviland Lake:

Monsoon Skies Over Hermosa Cliffs - 12x12"

This painting was as much about the clouds and skies as the landscape.  By the time I finished painting, the clouds had almost completely filled the sky and thunder could be heard to the northeast.

Painting from July 1 afternoon, at Pastorias SWA.  Looks much better in person, where the two layers of distal mountains are visible.  Much of Florida Mesa has been cultivated and developed to irrigated farmland, but I opted to paint this area of sagebrush and dry grasses to get a break from the green.

Everyone have a great weekend; with luck, I'll come back with a few paintings from Taos!

Especially love the bottom one - and the way you can feel the weight of the clouds.
Hope you have a great trip!

  7. I especially like the monsoon pastel. The clouds are lovely as are the colors of the mountains.

  8. Thanks, Ruth - that is one of my personal favorites in terms of both the clouds and rendering of the cliffs, which I've painted on at least 4 different occasions. It is encouraging to see improvements in one's work!
